On Monday, July 6, 2015, Floyd Mayweather was stripped of his WBO Welterweight Champion (147 lbs) title for noncompliance with the regulations of the organisation.
Floyd Mayweather won the WBO Welterweight title when he beat Manny Pacquiao via a decision on the historic May 2nd money-making bout, however, the WBO rules say that boxers cannot hold world titles in multiple weight classes. Mayweather had two junior middleweight champions when he won the welterweight title.
Floyd had until 4:30 p.m. EST on July 3 to vacate the two other belts and pay a $200,000 sanctioning fee (Floyd was paid $220 million for the #MayPac fight.)
“The WBO world championship committee is allowed no other alternative but to cease to recognise Mr. Floyd Mayweather Jr. as the WBO welterweight champion of the world and vacate his title for failing to comply with our WBO regulations of world championship contests,”
– the WBO wrote Monday in its resolution.
Floyd did not comply, and the WBO vacated the title on 6th July, 2015.
